Abstract

In this paper, a new observational instrument is described for codifying play in tennis doubles matches. The tool is based on an observational methodology. On the assumption that tennis doubles is a sport that involves both collaboration and competition, different types of strategic behaviour were recorded, based on interaction between partners in a tennis doubles match in a specific spatial context. The research study took what was basically an inductive empirical approach. The quality of the data was monitored and guaranteed by means of several procedures such as consensus agreements and a generalizability analysis.
