Abstract
This paper analyses the construction of offensive sequences ending with a shot of one of the best Spanish basketball teams in the youth category (Real Madrid). Based on the data obtained using the SOBL-2 observation instrument, developed ad hoc by Fernández, Camerino, Anguera and Jonsson (2009), two analyses were performed: one, a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis –using the SPSS program, version 19.0– and the other, aimed at finding temporal patterns –using the software Theme, version 5.0–, which have enabled us to characterise the construction of offensive sequences –effective and ineffective– that end in a shot. Furthermore, the comparison of these sequences with those of elite basketball highlighted the difficulties and/or limitations that basketball players of this age have under the current premises of the game corresponding to the youth category. The results suggest that it would be a good idea to adapt the game of basketball in the youth category based on the clear difficulty that players find in proving themselves competent at making outside shots.
